COVID-19: GMR led Delhi and Hyderabad Airports undertake massive sanitization

3 April 2020

The novel coronavirus or COVID-19 pandemic has spread its tentacles on around 180 countries of the world, including India. To check and contain the spread of dreaded virus, like other nations, India is witnessing a 21-day lockdown.

At a time, when people are locked in the safe environment of their homes, some unsung heroes of our Airports are working round-the-clock to sanitize and deep-clean the airports and its premise.

Our Airports, Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) and Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) have been maintaining enhanced standards of cleanliness and hygiene.

Since the rapid spread of COVID-19 across the world, almost every organization has encouraged people to work from home as a way to cut back contagion. Sensing the gravity of the situation, the government also suspended all services and banned the movement of people through various modes of transport during the lockdown. In fact, the whole world is staying guarded within their community with their family and loved ones.

However, staff from operations, housekeeping, landside management, inline baggage, airport rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) and airside operation teams are working round-the-clock to ensure unhampered operations at both the airports.

Understanding the need of the hour, the staff at Delhi Airport have been staying and leading a quarantined life. The housekeeping staff are engaged in extensive sanitization of all the terminal buildings to maintain an optimum levels of hygiene at the airport premises.

Working in the airport ecosystem, the past few days have proven extremely difficult for these staff members. Gripped by the fear of COVID-19 outbreak, some of them faced ostracization and were barred from entering their homes by their landlords, as they are seen as potential carriers of the virus due to their nature of work at the airport.

But such is the dedication of these workers that they decided to stay away from their families and neighbours for the sake of safety of others. Standing on the forefront and going beyond their call of duty, they have been leaving no stone unturned to keep a sterile environment for fliers and the citizens once the terminal opens after the lockdown.

To carry out the large scale sanitisation, GMR has deployed over 400 housekeeping staff who work on shifts at the Delhi and Hyderabad Airports. These workers are ensuring safety of the employees and working for the protection of health and well-being of the communities in which they operate.

Apart from the regular cleaning process, these workers are using Diversey chemical R1 and Deal sanitizers for sanitization and fumigation of the entire terminals.

Hyderabad Airport127,000sq.m (approx.)

Under the supervision of Terminal Operators team, the housekeeping staff of both the airports ensure that every bit of the extensive terminal areas -- approximately 624,000 square meters of the Delhi Airport and Hyderabad Airport's 127,000 square meters spread out across 7 levels of the terminal buildings, is made safe for passengers to transit once the terminals become operational. They have been frequently sanitizing the entire airport and cargo terminals by spraying disinfectant every day

All decked up in protective gears, these workers get checked for any COVID-19 symptoms regularly before resuming to their duty. They have been frequently sanitizing the entire airport and cargo terminals zone wise by spraying disinfectant every day.

The GMR led Delhi and Hyderabad Airports dedicated their lives within the airport premises, away from their families, and involved themselves in making the airport environment completely free of any malicious virus strain, ensuring their hygiene and safety.

Both Delhi International Airport and Hyderabad International Airport has sustainably positioned themselves among the world's best airports in the ACI-ASQ 2019 rankings. Prioritizing passenger safety has always been the key call of GMR led IGIA and RGIA. This has been established by winning the coveted Best Regional Airport both in India and Central Asia category in the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2019.
