Hands for Humanity - Joining Hands to help people in need with essential supplies
5 June 2020
At a time, when the Covid-19 pandemic severely affected the lives of people around the world and left thousands of poor people hungry, the world cried out for solidarity, dignity and empathy. GMR Varalakshmi Foundation (GMRVF), the CSR arm of GMR Group that develops social infrastructure and enhances the quality of lives of communities, felt the need to feed the needy. With this view, GMRVF joined hands with 92.7 Big FM and Delhi Police (Central District) to initiate a unique 10-days long campaign- Hands for Humanity - to reach out to more than 1000 vulnerable families (of labourers, migrant workers and others living below the poverty line) in Delhi and distribute dry rations to them that would take care of their two square meals for at least 7 to 10 days.
The Group’s prime motto of connecting and strengthening communities, inspiring and empowering them is as vital in this time of crisis as ever. And, aligned with this belief, Hands for Humanity campaign was encouraged with the idea that while we might not be able to shake hands, we can definitely join hands in helping those in need. 1000 packets of dry rations - each consisting of 5 kg rice, 5 kg aata, 1 kg sugar, 2 kg daal, 1 litre oil, salt and masala - were distributed for 10 days at 9 locations. With rising temperature of the city, chances of cooked food getting staled is high hence, the idea of distributing dry ration came into being. Through this initiative, we reached out to more and more needy people within a short span of time and providing them with food supplies for the next 7-10 days.
